EU seeking new term for 'local' farm products

The EU is looking for a "suitable" name that could be used to identify 'local' agricultural and food products - those produced on a farm and sold in short supply chains.
A public consultation has been launched to find a "short and snappy" name for such products that farmers could use, with an online questionnaire open until May 31.

The European Commission is considering a legislative proposal on a new, optional label for local farming and direct sales, along with one for 'island' farm products. A 'mountain' label is already in prospect, after a revision of the EU's quality food policy in January (see AE2547, 08.01.13).

The characteristics of local products are as follows, according to the Commission:
•    they are produced and processed on a specific farm up to the point where they are ready for marketing (such as fresh fruit, bread, sausage, cheese);
•    they are owned by and under the responsibility of the owner of the farm throughout the production and processing; and
•    they are sold through short supply chains, meaning a maximum of one intermediary seller exists between the farmer and the final consumer.
"We are now looking for a name that somehow covers all these characteristics, sounds good and is short enough to be remembered and used by everybody in daily life," added the EU executive. Words are being sought rather than a logo, it stressed.
Meanwhile, the Italian lamb product 'agnello del centro Italia' has this week been granted 'Protected Geographical Indication' (PGI) status, which requires either production, processing or preparation to take place in a specified area.
In other news, the Commission this week called on African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries to make more use of the EU's Geographical Indications (GI) scheme to protect their speciality foods.
